What is AITEN? AITEN is one of two English-Language Amnesty International groups (there are over 20 Japanese-language groups) in Tokyo, with over 40 members from more than 10 countries including Japan - copywriters and journalists, teachers, lawyers, students, translators, and company employees. Some were AI members before they came to Japan, but most joined here. What does AITEN do? Letter-writing - Usually on behalf of named individuals who are being denied their basic human rights; sometimes in connection with specific issues (e.g. prison conditions). Urgent Actions - We send letters, faxes or email to protest illegal detentions, torture, and imminent executions. Fundraising - We organize a benefit rock concert at What the Dickens in Ebisu several times a year. We also have other fundraising efforts. All proceeds go Amnesty International Japan. Publicity - We sell AI goods, collect signatures, hand out literature, and try to recruit new members, especially at international events. Film Nights - We organize a movie screening at Heaven's Door at Shimokitazawa on the last Sunday of every month. Education - We distribute materials about human rights issues at international events. We produce materials for use in schools and in human rights teaching. Does AI make a difference? Yes! Feedback from prisoners, human rights activists, and governments proves that Amnesty International's letter-writing and campaigning is effective. The organization won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 in recognition of its work. Today AI has over one million members worldwide. Together we do make a difference. Everybody can contribute in some way. |
Why did we join AI? * "I was interested in human rights issues, and I wanted to do something that could possibly make a small difference in the world;" * "I have always been interested in human rights and then I saw the ad in the Tokyo Classified [now Metropolis] and decided it was time to take action;" * "To do some good;" * "Because if we did nothing then those abusing their power would take it even further than they already do. AI...[also] recognizes abuses in countries which pretend they are fair and democratic, like Britain and the United States...; * "I wanted to join campaigns/NGOs which contribute to unprivileged people;" * "Because it works."
